The PGA Tour announced this week that Jim Furyk will be the captain of Team USA at the 2024 Presidents Cup. This is a huge honor for Furyk, who has been one of the most consistent and respected players in the game for over two decades.
The Presidents Cup is a biennial competition between teams of 12 players from the United States and the rest of the world, excluding Europe. The 2024 edition will be held at The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, from September 24th-29th.
Furyk has a vast amount of experience in team events under his belt, having played in nine Ryder Cups and eight Presidents Cups. He was also the captain of the 2018 Ryder Cup team, which lost to Europe in Paris. But he learned a lot from that defeat and is ready to lead his team to victory in Montreal next year in his debut as captain in this event. Last fall, Mike Weir was announced as the captain for the International team.
In making the announcement, Presidents Cup Executive Director, Ryan Hart, said “Jim’s long-standing career speaks volumes to his incredible success as both a player and a leader, each making him an exceptional choice to captain the U.S. Team at the 2024 Presidents Cup. We have received remarkable support from partners and fans throughout Canada and we know his presence in this event will only add to that enthusiasm. We couldn’t be happier to welcome Jim, Tabitha and his family to Montreal for what will be another incredible chapter of the Presidents Cup.”
Furyk, a 17-time winner on the PGA Tour, said “…being selected by my peers to take on the role as captain of the U.S. team for the 2024 Presidents Cup is truly an honor that I am humbled and excited to accept.” He continued, “Over the span of several decades, this event has evolved tremendously into the global showcase it is today, and I am thrilled to help continue that momentum. So many legendary captains have come before me, so now to be here as the 2024 U.S. team captain is quite remarkable.”
Furyk is widely seen as a great choice for Team USA. He is a proven leader, a fierce competitor, and a classy gentleman, and knows how to motivate his players and how to handle pressure situations. His knowledge and passion for the game can be a contagious trait which can only be a huge benefit to Team USA. His playing record in the event is also stellar, and holds the best winning percentage of all players who have played at least 20 matches, at 65.15 percent.
It will be intriguing to see how Furyk will shape his team and how he will strategize against Weir and his International squad, but there’s no doubt that it should be a thrilling and memorable Presidents Cup.
