Jim Furyk, a veteran of nine Ryder Cups as a player and one as a captain, has been appointed as a vice-captain for the U.S. team that will compete in the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome, Italy. Furyk will join Zach Johnson, the U.S. captain, and his fellow vice-captains Steve Stricker and Davis Love III, who have both led the U.S. to Ryder Cup victories in the past.
Furyk brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the U.S. team, which will aim to retain the trophy they won at Whistling Straits in 2021. Furyk was the captain of the U.S. team that lost to Europe at Le Golf National in 2018, but he also served as a vice-captain under Stricker in 2021 and under Love III in 2016, when the U.S. ended a three-match losing streak.
Although having mixed fortunes playing in the tournament, Furyk has a 10-20-4 record, and the U,S, is 2-7 when he has played, he is hoping that his leadership qualities will lead his team to another Ryder Cup victory in 2023. He made his debut in 1997 and played in every edition until 2014, forming memorable partnerships with Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Justin Leonard. He also won the U.S. Open in 2003 and reached the world number two ranking in 2006.
Johnson announced Furyk’s appointment on May 8, 2023, saying that they “have been friends for more than 20 years. He’s an amazing leader, mentor and someone I trust. He understands what it takes to compete at the highest level, and how to be a team player. I will be leaning on his experience a ton in the lead up to Marco Simone in September,” where the U.S. will try to win on European soil for the first time since 1993. Furyk said he was honored and excited to be part of Johnson’s team, “I’ve been involved in the Ryder Cup since 1997, and my passion for this event is unmatched. Captain Zach Johnson shares that passion, and I can’t wait to get to Italy to help our U.S. team work toward retaining the Ryder Cup at Marco Simone.”
Furyk was also named as the captain of the U.S. team for the 2024 Presidents Cup, which will take place at The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada, September 24-29, 2024. He will lead the U.S. against an International team captained by Mike Weir.
This year’s Ryder Cup takes place in Rome, Italy at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, from September 30th to October 2nd, 2023.
